Children playing in a Derry street had a lucky escape after a section of hoarding from a building site collapsed just yards away from them.
The incident happened in the Ard Grange area when the hoarding came down under the weight of heavy breezeblocks being stored at the building site.
The PSNI attended the scene and an investigation is under way into the incident.
One parent, Ann Conaghan said her five-year-old daughter had been playing in the street with her young friends when the hoarding collapsed.
“It was a lovely sunny day and they were all out playing in the street, when all of the sudden there was a huge bang.
“The hoarding came down with a lot of force and the children were right beside it, so we’re really angry here because they could have been seriously injured or worse.”
The independent councillor for the area Gary Donnelly said called owner of the site - where the new houses are being built - to take greater precautions to ensure the safety of surrounding residents.
“The hoarding came down with quite a bit of force and we’re very fortunate that no one was hurt given the number of young children playing in the street at the time,” he said.
“There’s been concerns previously and the owner of the site needs to ensure that this site is properly secured and the safety of people living here is now made a priority.”
Meanwhile, Sinn Fein councillor Colly Kelly said he would contacting both the Health and Safety Executive and Derry City and Strabane District Council to ensure the site was secured.
“This was a very worrying incident given that children were playing when the hoarding came down,” he said.
