Increase in number of hit and run traffic collisions in Derry car parks during December

Police in Derry have confirmed that their has been an increase in hit and run incidents taking place in Derry car parks since the beginning of December.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Since the start of December there’s been an increase in the number of reports to our Call Management Centres of hit and run traffic collisions within various car parks.

"While we appreciate the other driver may not always be present, a simple phone call to ourselves at CMC on 101 could resolve the matter quickly. We are happy to help and will provide you with a Ref number.

"Nobody likes coming back to their car damaged. Just think if it was your own car.

"If you have been involved in a road traffic collision you have a number of duties to comply with by law."

DRIVERS OBLIGATION:-
Stop your vehicle and remain at the scene for a reasonable time.
Report the collision within a reasonable time, either to police via 101 or the other party involved if they are present.
Exchange details with the other party, regardless of where you feel fault lies. The details you MUST exchange are: Name, Address, Vehicle registration number, details of your vehicle owner (if you do not own the vehicle you are driving). It may also be helpful if you carry a copy of your insurance certificate and be able to provide details of your insurer and the policy number you are covered under.
Failing to comply with any one of the above duties may render you liable to prosecution for a number of Road Traffic Offences.

More info can be found about this on the PSNI website.
