'This council is becoming a joke' - DUP walk out of meeting in protest over Derry support for Palestine following Trump declaration

A former Mayor of the city has said that the local council is 'becoming a joke' before joining her DUP party colleagues in a walk-out at a meeting earlier this afternoon.

The protest happened at this afternoon's monthly meeting of Derry City and Strabane Council, which was held at the Guildhall.

At the meeting, the independent councillor Gary Donnelly tabled a motion calling on council to 'view with dismay and concern' the decision by the US President Donald Trump to designate Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

He added that council should now call on Donald Trump to reverse his decision.

At that point, the DUP's Hilary McClintock asked: "Who does Cllr Donnelly think he is?"

She then added that Cllr Donnelly was 'seeking headlines' and there were concerns over the number of motions being brought before the council that had nothing to do with the local area.

Alderman McClintock then added that council was 'becoming a joke' by allowing such motions to come before meetings.

"The DUP have had enough of this," she added, before wishing everyone present a Merry Christmas and exiting the Guildhall Chamber with her party colleagues.

The SDLP's John Boyle said he found it 'quite amusing' that the DUP had accused Cllr Donnelly of 'stunt politics' before they walked out of the chamber.

Council then agreed to send a letter to Donald Trump calling on him to reverse his decision, depsite opposition from the Ulster Unionists and the independent unionist councillor Maurice Devenney.
