A supermarket in Derry city centre yesterday refused to comment on its future plans, after local residents expressed fears it is to close.
The Derry News was contacted last week by community representatives who expressed concern that the SuperValu store in Waterloo Place may close in the New Year.
After being contacted by The Derry News a spokesperson for the Musgrave Group, who own the Supervalu brand, refused to confirm their future plans for the store.
However they did confirm that they are aware of speculation surrounding the store's future, but said they were not in a position to comment on the rumours at this time.
"We are aware of the current speculation but are not in a position to comment at this time," the spokesperson confirmed.
Local councillor Sean Carr called for the company to clarify their position.
"The staff at the shop are currently unaware of any proposed closure of the store," said Cllr Carr.
"If they do intend to close the store in the New Year then staff should be informed as soon as possible to allow them to search for new positions before the closure.
"This speculation will create a lot of worry around Christmas for the staff and their families."
Cllr Carr said that local shoppers would also lose out if the store was to close.
"The closure would be another blow to Derry city centre, the store is used by many customers on a daily basis," he said.
"The fact that they have not denied they are closing is a warning sign and I would call on SuperValu to put the speculation to bed for the sake of their staff and customers."
