A researcher from Sligo is asking for help for information about a County Derry man executed in Donegal by the Free State Government in 1923.

John Morris is conducting research into the 77 official executions of Anti-Treaty Republicans conducted by the Free State during 1922 to 1923 Civil War.

And he is particularly interested in the stories of the four men, who were executed in Drumboe Castle outside Stranorlar on March 14, 1923.

Kerry men Tim O'Sullivan, Danny Enright and Charlie Daly, along with Derry man Sean Larkin from Magherafelt, subsequently became known as the Drumboe Martyrs.

"I'm seeking through your readership to find out more about Sean Larkin," said Mr Morris.

"There are many references to him on the internet and within printed material but I'd be particularly interested in meeting any descendants who have kept his story alive, perhaps had in their family possession items such as originals of photographs, memorial cards or last letters for e.g. or any personal items that belonged to him.

"It would be a great privilege for me to meet some descendants, see such treasured items that had been handed down through the years and perhaps be allowed to photograph or scan them with the family's permission.

"If any of your readers are descendants of Sean Larkin and can be of assistance to me on this - or indeed know of any leads that I could follow to meet up with people and obtain information, then I’d ask that they contact me please via Gmail or mobile phone. I am looking forward to receiving some replies."

The four Drumboe prisoners were executed in apparent retaliation after a Free State captain was shot dead in Creeslough Barracks.

Peadar O'Donnell the local Republican Commander in Donegal denied his men were behind the attack, and there are suggestion that the Creeslough attack may have been launched by local villagers angry at the arrest of some men in the village.

The Free State government were initially reluctant to execute Mr Larkin as he was from the Six Counties. And despite pleas from the Catholic church for clemency, at 8am on the morning of March 14, the four men were led into the woods beside Drumboe Castle and shot.0

After the Civil War ended, Mr Larkin's remains were returned to his family for re-burial in 1924.
