The funeral is taking place today of the Derry republican Billy Nelis, who died on Friday at the age of 85.
A postman by profession, Mr Nelis became active in the H Block and Hunger Strike campaigns, after the imprisonment of two of his sons Donncha and John, both of whom took part in the 'Blanket' protest.
His wife Mary, who survives him, was elected as a Sinn Fein representative to Derry City Council and subsequently to the Assembly as an MLA for Foyle. His son-in-law, Declan Kearney, is the current Sinn Fein MLA for South Antrim.
Sinn Fein MP Elisha McCallion was among those paying tribute to Mr Nelis at the weekend.
The Foyle MP said: “There is great sadness among Derry republicans following the death of Billy Nelis. Billy was a lifelong republican and was highly regarded across the city and behind.
"During the darkest days of the conflict, Billy was a stalwart at republican protests and demonstrations, particularly around the prison struggle.
“My thoughts and sympathies are with Mary and the entire Nelis family at this sad time.”
Mr Nelis's coffin, draped in the Tricolour, was taken from his home in Dove Gardens to the Long Tower for 10am Mass this morning, followed by burial at the City Cemetery.
He had nine children: Donncha, Liam, John, Patrick, Martin, Declan, Cathy, Frank, and the late Peter.
