Derry's council this evening granted planning permission - pending certain conditions - for a £117m super-store and medical centre at the former Arntz Belting site in the Pennyburn.

The 15-acre site has lain empty since Arntz Belting Company closed down its Derry factory on Pennyburn Pass in 2010. But it will now become home to a 5,574 sqm footsore,  a 390sqm restaurant and a 6,901sqm medical building.

The decision to approve the plans was made at a meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council's Planning Committee yesterday.

The committee discussed the application for around two and a half hours, the majority of which centred around the traffic impact of the development.

The meeting was told further investigations will be needed into the flood risk posed by the unlikely event of a disaster at the Creggan Reservoir.
