The UUP have raised concerns over plans for an Irish Language Week in Derry.

Council officers outlined plans for the event at a meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council's Governance and Strategic Planning Committee at the Guildhall this week.

Irish Language Week in an annual event which takes place between the 1st and 17th March.

Plans for the event include a two-day long literary conference and lecture event taking place at the Ulster University Magee campus on March 9-10 and a Pop-Up Gaeltacht Event, led by Derry City and Strabane District Council due to take place in Strabane on St Patrick’s Day.

UUP councillor Derek Hussey said he was confused as he was not aware of council supporting the event in the past.

He also asked why it was called a week when it actually lasts for 17 days.

Alderman Hussey asked council officers if it was a case of 'giving an inch, and taking a mile'.

A council officer replied to Alderman Hussey's concerns, saying that there was no specific budget for the event but it was being incorporated into the Spring Carnival with an Irish language element.

Council has committed approximately £30,000 to support the inaugural St Patrick’s Day Spring Carnival event in Strabane and a portion of this contribution will be allocated to celebrating the Irish language within the multicultural zone.
