'Disgusting and disheartening' - illegal dumping continues at Derry street despite repeated clean-ups and awareness campaigns

ILLEGAL dumping is continuing at a fly-tipping hotspot in Derry despite the installation of CCTV cameras and campaigns involving landlords in the area.

The latest incident saw over 30 black bags of waste dumped at a lane off the Northland Road last week (pictured above).

The area has been plagued by illegal dumping in alleyways which resulted in a number of clean-ups in the area.

It was revealed in April of last year that Derry City and Strabane District Council were undertaking a pilot CCTV scheme in the Rosemount area in an attempt to combat illegal dumping and dog fouling.

However, there has been no let-up in the illegal dumping at a problem site off the Northland Road.

Speaking to the Derry News at the weekend, the independent councillor for the area, Darren O’Reilly said it was ‘deeply frustrating’ that the dumping was continuing despite the best efforts of both local representatives and council to address the issue.

“There’s been a lot of work done here in the area where we’ve spoken to landlords who own properties and made them aware of the extent of the problem and how bad it makes the area look,” he told the Derry News.

“This has involved leaflet drops, meetings and council coming out to lift the rubbish.

“Unfortunately, it seems that the message is still not getting through.”

Cllr O’Reilly added that issues such as the availability of wheelie bins had also been addressed with those living in the area.

“In fairness, all that can be done has been done, where all the necessary advice has been handed out and channels opened to ensure that every house has the appropriate number of bins,” he continued.

“But to see this still happening like this, it’s just disgusting and disheartening.”

The Derry News contacted Derry City and Strabane District Council on Friday for statement on any action which was being taken in relation to the dumping but it had not responded at the time of going to press.
