Actor James Nesbitt impresses St Mary's College students with his impressions of the cast of 'Derry Girls' during visit to the city

The actor James Nesbitt impressed students at a local school earlier this week with his impressions of the cast of 'Derry Girls' during a visit the city as part of his role as Chancellor of Ulster University (on Monday 5 March).

Dr Nesbitt along with Malachy Ó Néill, Provost of the Magee campus, Professor Raffaella Folli, Provost (Jordanstown and Belfast) and Karise Hutchinson, Provost (Coleraine) took part in an afternoon programme of school engagements across the city.

The delegation firstly visited St Mary’s College where he was greeted by Principal Mrs. Marie Lindsay and other staff, who escorted him to an assembly hall full of pupils from a number of schools, including Oakgrove Integrated College, Thornhill College, St Cecilia’s College and St Bricin’s College, Cavan.

Dr Nesbitt took part in a Q&A session during which he was asked about how he pursued a career in acting, the challenges of working as an actor with a Northern Irish accent, the road to his success and his impressions of the recent television phenomenon Derry Girls.

After participating in numerous selfies and receiving the gift of a portrait from the pupils, he then moved onto Foyle College where he met students and staff, including an old school acquaintance, Principal Mr Patrick Allen.

He took part in a Q&A and shared stories about his introduction to drama and acting as a young boy living in Coleraine and how he changed his career path, from studying French to attending the Central School of Speech and Drama in London.
