Work is set to begin on almost 180 new social homes in the Skeoge area of Galliagh after approval was issued for the development.
Apex Housing had sought approval for 176 new houses, six of which are complex needs units, with associated parking and landscaping at lands south of Skeoge Link and north of Lower Galliagh Road.
The development site is located close to the existing Clon Elagh development, pictured above.
Yesterday's meeting of Derry & Strabane Planning Committee was told that two objects had been received from Glendale Park and Glendale Gardens, leading to a loss of privacy. The planners had met with the objectors and agreed an increased separation distance.
The planning officer told the meeting that the projected housing need in the west bank was 2160 new homes between 2017 and 2022.
The SDLP's Angela Dobbins welcomed the scheme but added that 5,000 new homes were needed in the area it was a 'spit in the ocean'.
The DUP's Hilary McClintock said it was an excellent scheme and 'badly needed'.
While Sinn Fein's Christopher Jackson said that we should be mindful of former councillor Tony Hassan's concerns that such new housing developments must have appropriate community facilities.
