SHealth and safety inspectors have visited a building site in Derry after a hoarding collapsed into a street, just yards from where young children were playing.

The incident happened in the Ard Grange area of the city at around 6.00pm on Sunday when the perimeter fence came down into the street under the weight of heavy breeze blocks.

A group of young children had been playing in the street at the time, narrowly avoiding serious injury and prompting concerns among parents and local political representatives over the safety of the site.

Inspectors from the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI) have visited the building site after being notified of the incident by the PSNI.

However, when the HSENI inspector arrived there site was closed up and there were no contractors present.

The HSENI has said it was continuing to make enquiries regarding the site.

Commenting, the independent councillor for the area, Gary Donnelly has sought assurances from the HSENI that action would be taken to ensure the site is properly secured and that no one living close to the building site is placed at risk.
