Derry's council is to look at installing CCTV cameras at a number of 'hot-spots' in the city to catch motorists dumping rubbish out their car windows.
The proposal came at this afternoon's meeting of Derry City and Strabane District Council's Environment and Regeneration Committee.
At the meeting, the DUP's David Ramsey said that while the problem was bad in the city, it was 'disgraceful' around the back roads of Newbuildings.
He proposed that council should now look at installing CCTV cameras in the area and another number of sites in the city to catch those responsible.
"We have cameras, so let's make a few examples of people," he said.
"A few fines might make people think twice."
The SDLP's Brian Tierney backed the proposal, before asking how successful council had been in issuing fines to people throwing rubbish out of car windows.
Responding, Karen Phillips, Director of Environment and Regeneration with the council, said that she did not have the figures to hand, but added that council had issued a number of Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) for such offences.
She then added that council will now look at the CCTV option.
