Derry Magistrate’s Court has heard that a 26-year-old man assaulted two female Scottish tourists on the city’s Peace Bridge.

Caoimhan Rush, of Iniscarn Crescent, admitted a charge of disorderly behaviour on September 30 of last year.

The court heard that CCTV showed a man ‘assaulting two females on the Peace Bridge’.

Rush was identified as the male responsible and subsequently arrested at 3.20am.

According to a Public Prosecution Service (PPS) representative, footage showed the 26-year-old talking to two females before they went in separate directions.

The defendant was then said to have sprinted up behind them and kicked both of them causing them to fall over.

The Public Prosecutor said both of the injured parties were ‘tourists from Scotland’ and they ‘refused to make any statement’.

During police interview Rush admitted kicking one of the females but said he ‘couldn’t remember assaulting the second’.

Representing the 26-year-old, defence solicitor Keith Kyle said it had been five years since his client last committed any offence.

Rush has no recollection of the incident, he explained, but was pleading guilty.

Describing it as a ‘disgraceful incident’, District Judge Barney McElholm fined the defendant £750 and warned that if he doesn’t make a reasonable effort to pay it he will be ‘committed to prison for non-payment’.
