The Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Cllr Elisha McCallion is extending an invitation to the public to come along and attend her Day of Reflection that is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, 25 May next at 12.45pm in Guildhall Square.

The event is being organised in memory of all those from within the Council area who have lost their lives as a result of war and conflict and will be non-religious and non-political around the theme of hope.

Speaking ahead of the event, the Mayor said she felt it was important to hold a public event that would bring communities together to share their experiences and reflect their loss. She said the event is cross community and an opportunity for the public to remember loved ones they have lost through war or conflict.

Choirs from St. Mary’s and Holy Cross schools will be performing alongside instrumental music from the Education Authority and pupils from St. Cecilia’s College, St. Columb’s College and Oakgrove Integrated Secondary schools, who participated in the Reading for Reflection competition will do the readings

The Mayor will also unveil a plaque on the City Walls.

Buses are being made available from a number of locations from within the Council district for those wishing to travel to the event.

The buses will be available from the following two routes Castlederg, Victoria Bridge, Strabane, Bready and Newbuildings, or Eglinton, Claudy, Shantallow and Pennyburn. To register to attend the event and for transport please contact Karen Tracey at the Council by this Friday, 20 May - Karen.Tracey@derrystrabane.com or call 028 7125 3253, ext 4296.

Encouraging the public to register and advance and to make time in their busy schedules to come along to the event, Cllr McCallion said: “The Day of Reflection is an opportunity for everyone to come together and stand united as we remember loved ones who have sadly lost their lives through war or conflict.

“Many of us have suffered greatly during our troubled past and the Day of Reflection is a chance for us all to unite and take time from our busy lives to reflect and remember. I hope to see as many people as possible coming along on the day,” she added.
