New figures have revealed the funding allocated to every nursery, primary and secondary school in Derry in 2018/19.
It comes after Northern Ireland schools were told earlier this week they are to receive £6 less per pupil in 2018-19.
The figures, obtained by the Belfast Telegraph, show St Columb’s College gets the biggest allocation in the city at £6,177,771, followed by Thornhill College at £5,972,824.
In 2017-18, the cash value of most primary and nursery school pupils under the common funding formula was £2,004.71, a reduction of £56 from their cash value the previous year.
SDLP Foyle MLA, Mark H Durkan, said his party has sought assurances from the Department of Education that staff within their financial division will immediately determine how much money is required to bring the budget up to the same level as last year
“This is clearly not acceptable and is turning our school Principals into Accountants rather than leaders for our children and champions of their education,” said Mr Durkan.
“The Permanent Secretary explained that the budget this year will be the same as last but with an extra 3000 pupils this year, the money will be forced to stretch further.
“I have asked the Department to determine how much additional cash would be needed so this can be sought in any forthcoming in-year monitoring rounds by the Secretary of State and a commitment to be forthcoming from the Department that this funding will be directed to schools.
“I welcome that the funding for the Department this year means that ‘doomsday scenarios,’ which had been planned for and included cuts to Youth Services and SureStart programmes, have been avoided but such sectors do need assurances going forward.
