Police have appealed for information about an incident in Derry in which a 30-year-old man was shot and his mother injured as she fought off his attackers.

The man was rushed to Altnagelvin Hospital after he was shot a number of times in both ankles at around 3.30am yesterday morning.

His injuries are not thought to be life-threatened.

He was taken from a house at Yeats Court in the Ballymagroarty area and shot in a nearby alleyway (pictured).

His 58-year-old mother was also taken to hospital for treatment on a fractured arm sustained as she fought with her son’s attackers.

Police are trying to establish a motive for the attack and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.

Inspector Gregory Smith appealed to anyone who has information about the incident to contact police at Strand Road on the non-emergency number 101, or if someone would prefer to provide information without giving their details they can contact the independent charity Crimestoppers and speak to them anonymously on 0800 555 111.

The incident has been widely condemned.

SDLP Councillor John Boyle said: “This sort of summary justice is just unacceptable in what is supposed to be a civilised society.

“This kind of attack only succeeds in bringing further trauma and heartache and as was evidenced in Belfast recently, the potential for death is very real.”

Sinn Fein Councillor Eric McGinley said: “There can be no place in our society for such actions.

"Those behind this incident have nothing to offer the local community and need to stop these futile actions immediately.

“I would appeal for anyone with information on this shooting to bring it forward to the PSNI."

The attack was the second punishment-style shooting in Derry within the past month.

A man in his 20s was critically injured when shot in the legs in the Magowan Park area of Creggan on April 18.
