Derry Sinn Féin Councillor Kevin Campbell has condemned an overnight incident in Creggan during which vandals went on a wrecking spree burning bins and smashing bottles beside a memorial to local IRA Volunteer Seamus Bradley on Chapel Lane.

Councillor Campbell condemned the vandalism as a 'shameful'.

He said "It seems young people stole a bin full of bottles and went on a breaking spree last night with no concern for young children or the people in this community. The laneway is widely used by people going to the Creggan shops, St Marys Chapel, Bishops Field pitches and the local park.

"I have spoken to the council and they are going to clean the laneway today.

"All memorials should be respected and treated with the respect and dignity they deserve.

"There can be no place for these incidents around monuments, memorials and other places where people remember their dead."
