Sinn Féin Foyle MLA Karen Mullan has expressed support for Autism Awareness Week (26th March – 2nd April) which aims to raise awareness of Autism, break the stigma and increase education on Autism throughout these islands.

Karen Mullan said: “This week marks Autism Awareness Week, this gives us the opportunity to raise awareness of Autism and send our solidarity to children, adults and families who are affected by Autism.

“I am a member of the Assembly’s All Party Group on Autism which allows me to work with all of the other political parties, service users and Autism awareness groups to deliver on the Autism Strategy.

“Since entering the role of MLA in June, I have been working with support groups, families and children with autism and other special educational needs.

"All of those families have highlighted the need for greater provision and support for their children. I have lobbied the Education Authority to ensure improvements in assessments, classroom assistants and early years’ intervention.

“Locally, Sinn Féin have been engaging with Health Trusts to seek extra support for people with Autism and their families. We have also been working with Derry City & Strabane District Council to make local businesses and amenities Autism friendly.

“I would encourage everyone to get involved with Autism Awareness Week, raise awareness of what autism is, what autistic people go through on a daily basis and play your part in making their lives easier.”
