Ruff justice - Derry dogs to be banned from beaches in Donegal

Dogwalkers in Derry could be waving goodbye to leisurely strolls on Lisfannon beach this time next year when Brexit finally takes effect.

It marks the latest blow ahead of the Article 50 deadline next year, after The European Commission announced on Thursday that after Brexit, any and all UK citizens and companies will be barred from owning .eu domain names.

However, it’s also emerged that EU regulations regarding animal owners and their access to beaches will mean that people living in the north will not enjoy the same privileges as their counterparts in Donegal.

Currently, the majority of beaches in the EU have restricted access for our four-legged friends.

At a recent meeting of Donegal County Council, a report was brought to its Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) outlining tighter restrictions on dogs having access to beaches in the interests of health and safety, after concerns were raised about levels of dog fouling.

It’s understood that in the wake of that, the council has been contacted by dog walkers from the Inishowen area hitting out at the proposals, citing that as EU citizens, their rights to open access should be enshrined.

However, while the council is understood to have taken their views on board, it has said that visitors to Donegal beaches from the north will not be regarded in the same way as EU citizens and therefore the restrictions will apply to both them and their pets.

One particular by-law may well be introduced but it has limitations as it is linked to an April 1st 12noon deadline!
