Derry’s District Judge has criticised a lack of cooperation from the PSNI in dealing with certain cases before the court.

The comments were made by Resident Magistrate Barney McElholm at Derry Magistrates Court yesterday as he dealt with a case that is over two-years-old.

Keith Palmer, 38, of Maureen Avenue, has been charged with assaulting and resisting police as well as disorderly behaviour and criminal damage on December 25 of 2015.

District Judge Barney McElholm criticised delays in the case and said notebook entries should be in storage.

He said he wanted a PSNI ‘Inspector or someone of that rank’ to appear in court on April 6 to provide an explanation.

“I’m getting a bit fed up with the police’s attitude towards this court,” he said.

“Back in the days when things used to be run properly someone would have been dispatched to the store to recover them. Nowadays there are only ever excuses.”
Judge McElholm continued: “On Friday I want someone here to explain what is going on.

“Police officers of a junior rank feel they can ignore decisions of the court, it seems to be happening at will.”

The case was taken to a court sitting on Friday, April 6.
