There are no immediate plans to close the Carpetright store in Derry, a spokesperson for the company has said.

Carpetright currently has a store in Derry at Crescent Link Retail Park in the Waterside area.

There had been recent reports that Carpetright, the leading floor covering business in the UK, was down-sizing for financial reasons.

Carpetright own 420 mainly out-of-town stores and 15 concessions in the UK. Carpetright had been reported as ‘closing duplicate and underperforming outlets while refurbishing its remaining stores with new branding’.

However, Carpetright have announced that they are exploring a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA), which would aim to pay creditors over a fixed period and have not announced definite closures.

A Carpetright spokesman said: “We announced recently that we are exploring the feasibility of a CVA to help us address the legacy property issues which have left us burdened with too many poorly located stores on rents which are simply unsustainable.

“No final decision has been taken and it is too early to confirm which stores may be affected.

“We also announced a successful fundraising which will enable us to make the necessary decisions on this process free from short term funding pressure.”

He added: “In the interim, it is very much business as usual for all of our stores.”
