Cllr. McGinley said: “As we approach the summer months and the better weather there is an increasing tendency not to lock the doors and windows of our homes and vehicles.
“In addition there is the tendency to leave items such as car keys, laptops, purses and wallets in clear view.
“It is evident that a significant number of thefts and break-ins are the result of opportunist criminals coming across valuables which are easily accessed through unlocked doors and windows.”
Cllr McGinley concluded: “It is a sad reflection on society that people cannot leave their property and possessions unsecured but whilst there are those who are prepared to engage in this criminality I would encourage everyone in Derry to be vigilant and to take all necessary precautions.”
