The police in Derry say an overnight security alert at Hawthorn Drive in the Springtown Road area of the city [pictured] is now over.

A spokesperson said: "The security alert is now ended and all residents allowed to return to their homes. ATO declared the object to be a hoax."

A number of homes had been evacuated following discovery of a suspicious object in area. It's understood the object had been thrown close to a car.

Earlier last night, the independent councillor Darren O'Reilly, also reported an incident in the nearby Hawthorn Grove area.

He said: "I have been contacted by a resident in Hawthorn Grove to say someone was in their back yard, and neighbour's back yard, trying to get in to their shed. Please be vigilant."
