Public representatives have expressed concern over a security alert in Hawthorn Drive area of Derry in which up to 50 families were forced to leave their homes in the early hours of yesterday morning.

The independent councillor Darren O'Reilly, who lives in the area off Springtown Road, said yesterday's incident had caused 'major disruption'.

"Most of those affected were able to get shelter with family or friends, while a number of others availed of the community response facility at St Eithne's Park, where a common room was set aside to cater for them," he said.

Cllr O'Reilly remained with the residents at St Eithne's until the object was declared safe at around 6am and they were allowed back into their homes. A police spokesperson said ATO declared the object to be a 'hoax'.
