Translink has welcomed Derry City and Strabane District Council’s decision to give planning approval for a £27m investment plans to redevelop the former Waterside Train Station as a Multi Modal Transport Hub.
The multi-million pound plans will redevelop the former Waterside Train Station as a new, Multi-Modal Transport Hub for public transport, cycling and active travel.
The project has secured significant European INTERREG VA funding and will support continued passenger growth.
John Glass, Head of Projects said: “We are delighted that the committee has approved the proposals and has recognised the merits that the Multi Modal Transport Hub will provide.
“This decision marks the beginning of a significant transformation in the way people travel in the North-West region.
"As an important gateway it will encourage modal shift from car to public transport and other sustainable modes by providing integrated and convenient services to enhance connectivity and encourage more active travel for a healthier region. This supports a key outcome of the draft Programme for Government.
“In addition, it offers social and economic benefits with the potential to be a catalyst for further investment and tourism, making the local area more attractive to business and investors, creating jobs and enhancing the economy while protecting the built heritage of the iconic Grade B listed Waterside Train Station.”
“We have invested heavily in public transport for the city in recent years with track enhancements and new bus fleets. We are seeing more and more people on board, and this decision today is a further positive step in providing an enhanced customer experience to encourage more people to make bus and rail your first choice for travel.
“We would like to thank the committee for their decision, as well as a broad swathe of business, commercial and tourism stakeholders for their support. We are looking forward to working alongside all our stakeholders to successfully deliver this £27m investment, with works expected to start later this year”, he concluded.
