A well-known Derry runner will take on the gruelling challenge of the Walled City Marathon with an added twist this June raising funds for the Foyle Hospice in memory of his sister.
Sean McIvor from U-Turn Running Club will participate in this year’s SSE Airtricity Walled City Marathon in memory of his sister Rhonda Wilson on June 3 and, not only will Sean take on the mammoth task of running 26.2 miles, he will also be pushing a specially adapted bed around the course, to help raise awareness of the care and services provided by the Foyle Hospice.
“I was asked in November to take on this challenge to help raise awareness of the wonderful work carried out by Foyle Hospice and I jumped at the chance to do this,” he said.
“I feel privileged to be taking part in this year’s Walled City Marathon in Rhonda’s memory because, as a family, we have experienced first-hand the invaluable work that Foyle Hospice do for the local community.
“During Rhonda’s illness, the Hospice nurses provided exceptional care for her at home and in her final hours they helped make her comfortable and peaceful.
“The Hospice has also provided support to our family since Rhonda’s passing. I have always had a special place in my heart for Foyle Hospice as they also helped care for my Dad, who passed away almost 14 years ago.”
Ailbhe Temple, Community Fundraising Officer at Foyle Hospice, said: “Sean has been a long-time supporter of our Hospice.
“We are indebted to Sean for taking on this challenge, helping to raise awareness of the work of Foyle Hospice and the services we provide to our patients and their families across the North West and at the same time raising much needed funds to allow us to continue to provide specialist palliative care services.
“Sean will be accompanied on the day by Foyle Hospice Head Chef, Bill Duncan as well as representatives from running clubs across the city.
“A Big thank you to everyone taking part, we will look forward to seeing you all at the finish line!”
