A Derry Councillor says a new bank machine which offers customers the chance to make their transactions in English or Welsh is ‘bizarre’.

The bilingual hole in the wall is located on Derry’s Strand Road, beside Fiorentini’s Café.

“I find it very bizarre,” said Sinn Fein Councillor Kevin Campbell, who is himself an Irish speaker.

“Welsh is not a language of this country and I think you would find it very difficult to find a Welsh speaker in Derry.

“But we have many Irish language speakers in this city and we have three bunscoils with 560 children learning through the Irish medium.

“We also have a thriving cultural centre at An Culturlann and hundreds of people in adult education classes learning the Irish language.

“Surely it should be giving you the chance to do your banking in Irish, not Welsh

“You would wonder what was going through their minds when they installed it.”
