A Derry councillor has challenged a council statistic that its current bin collection rate stood at 96 per cent.

The figure was revealed during a recent meeting of the Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Environment and Regeneration Committee.

At the meeting, the Annual Service Plan for the council’s Environment and Regeneration directorate was presented to members.

The report stated that 96 per cent of household bins were collected on the scheduled collection day, which was the current target for the department.

However, the DUP’s David Ramsey questioned the figures, adding that his office was receiving phone calls every week from people whose bins had not been collected.

“This figure can’t be right,” he said.

“It can’t be the weather now so there has to be a shortfall somewhere.”

Responding, Karen Philips, Director of Environment and Regeneration with the council, said she would ‘appreciate’ if councillors would let her know of such issues so that they could be ‘followed up’.

Alderman Ramsey replied that he had let council staff know of the issue as they had been contacted by telephone, and asked for a report to be brought back on the issue.
