Donegal County Council is to clean up its Meendoran dump on the main Buncrana to Clonmany road, the Inish Times can reveal.
The Council confirmed it owned the dump (pictured) at the Meendoran Road junction and stated “works will be undertaken in the coming weeks to remove debris and clean up the site.”
It also said fencing would be erected to prohibit dumping at the site.
Locals had raised concerns about the Meendoran dump and questioned why such a mess was left along one of the main roads into Ballyliffin, in the run up to the Irish Open.
One said: “Why was it left like that? A private person could not do it. The Council has been in here tipping. You can see what is there. Tarmac from the water bursts.
“Who is doing the tarmacing? It is not private people because private people do not dump tar. So, Donegal County Council is dumping there.
“That field was below the road when I was going to school. It has just filled and filled. That field used to be about two feet below the road. I have seen the Water Works lorries dumping stuff in here. You only have to look at the evidence of the stuff that is dumped there, tar.
“There is water near here, the river. They chat about pollution, then why are they dumping it there?
"If somebody was dumping that anywhere else they would be in trouble.
"They chat about dumping a piece of paper out of a car, sure that there is worse,” he said.
