A vigil for the seriously ill Liverpool toddler, Alfie Evans, took place today at the Guildhall Square.

The little boy, who is almost two-years-old, has been legally prevented from travelling abroad for medical treatment after life support was withdrawn at Alder Hey Hospital on Monday.

The Court of Appeal upheld the ruling preventing the 23-month-old from travelling to Italy, yesterday.

Alfie's parents, Tom Evans and Kate James, had wanted their son, who has a rare undiagnosed condition that has led to progressive degeneration of his brain, to go to Rome for treatment in the hope it would prolong his life.

However, today Mr Evans told the press that their son was 'struggling' and that he and Alfie's mother were meeting with doctors at 2pm to discuss taking their baby home to spend their last moments together.

They have not ruled out further legal action.

Derry people showed their support and sympathy for the the baby boy and his family by holding a vigil in the Guildhall Square today at 12.30pm.
