Sinn Féin Councillor Colly Kelly has said lives are being put at risk with indiscriminate dumping at a stairwell in a flats complex at Gartan Square in the Bogside.

Councillor Colly Kelly said “I was shocked to see the scale of the dumping at Gartan Square in an area which seen a serious fire back in 2016.

"At that time flames from the fire engulfed the stairway and smoke entered a number of homes.

"Following the fire the bin shed was removed which left the space an open area for residents to place their household rubbish bins in.

"Sadly more than rubbish for bins is now being dumped there .It is causing a fire hazard, it’s an awful mess.

"I have been in touch with the Housing Executive and the Enforcement officer at the Council to see what can be done.

"The Housing Executive have been very good in clearing the area in recent times, but they cannot be left to continually clear up this mess, its taking up valuable time and resources.

"I would urge anyone looking to dump bulky or large household goods to contact the council for collection.

"It shocking that this dumping is happening when there is a free service."
