Police hunt driver after woman and children escape injury in Derry car crash

Police are hunting a driver after a woman and two children narrowly avoided being hit by a car in Derry.

They had just been crossed Ringfort Road at Holy Family Primary School in the Ballymagroarty area by crossing attendant when a car (pictured), claimed to be travelling at speed, went out of control and swerved into an oncoming vehicle.

According to eye witnesses, the driver of the fled the scene on foot.

It is understood that a woman driving the other car was taken to hospital for examination.

Sinn Féin Councillor Eric McGinley said people were shocked by the incident.

“This must have a been a very frightening experience for everyone caught up in this incident particularly at this time of day as children were coming home from school.

“I hope the lady driver is ok and I would appeal to anyone who seen this incident to contact the PSNI straight away.”

The PSNI said they investigating the incident, which occurred yesterday afternoon, and have appealed for witnesses to come forward.
