The iconic “Scalp Challenge” in aid the humanitarian agency Concern Worldwide has entered its second decade and is seeking willing and able Derry volunteers.
On Sunday, May 13, at 3.00pm, hundreds of walkers, including whole families, will commence the 11th annual “Challenge”, a 2.5-mile walk up Scalp Mountain in aid of Concern Worldwide.
The route to the registration point will be signposted from Bridgend.
The “Scalp Challenge” itself follows concrete roadway known locally as Henry’s Highway, after Henry McLaughlin, the local farmer who built the road to the top of the mountain.
On a good day, the view from Scalp can be spectacular with panoramic views over Lough Foyle, Foyle Swilly and the surrounding countryside in counties Donegal and Derry. On a really clear day, even the islands of Scotland and Ben More on the Scottish mainland are visible.
It is 50 years since John and the late Kay O’Loughlin Kennedy gathered together a few like-minded friends, in an attempt to respond in some way to the desperate plight of the people of Biafria.
That compassionate impulse has grown over the years into Concern Worldwide, one of the most formidable, professional and effective aid agencies saving lives and building bright futures in today’s world.
If you share that impulse and want to play your part then the “Scalp Challenge” is your chance.
This year, the need to fundraise for Concern Worldwide remains acute.
A range of events, including the appalling civil war in Syria and the refugee crisis in Myanmar Bangladesh, present great challenges, in terms of responding to the desperate need of many innocent victims of conflict and natural disaster.
Together with its colleagues in the Disasters Emergency Committee, Concern Worldwide is doing its utmost to save lives and to protect hard won development gains in many countries.
If you think you can help with this vital work, pull on your hiking boots or trainers and follow the signs to the “Scalp Challenge” from Bridgend. Better still, bring your family, friends and neighbours along too.
