THE Derry Girls star Jamie-Lee O’Donnell was one of hundreds of people who gathered at the riverbank in the early hours of Saturday morning for a fundraising walk.

The Darkness into Light walk saw participants set off from the Sainsbury’s café at 4.15 am on Saturday morning before completing the 5km route as dawn began to break, reminding people that after darkness, comes light.

The event, which is sponsored by Electric Ireland and is now in its tenth year, is aimed at helping raising awareness about the impact of suicide and self-harm, and raising vital funds for local charities.

Jamie-Lee, better known as ‘Michelle’ from the hit Channel 4 comedy series, was one of the ambassadors for this year’s walk, which helped support the work of Have Your Tomorrows (HURT), which helps those affected by alcohol and drug issues, and Pieta House, a suicide and self-harm crisis centre.

A spokesperson for Electric Ireland said: “Through this year’s ‘Wake Up’ campaign, Electric Ireland, Pieta House and its beneficiary charities want to build a movement and help de-stigmatise suicide and self-harm and instead spread a message of hope, self-care and acceptance.”
