Bonfire materials and debris from recent fires were cleared from Galliagh's Linear Park by the statutory agencies today.

This followed several incidents over the previous few days, where bonfires were built with stolen pallets and dumped tyres.

Two large bonfires were set alight during the week - one of which had a stolen car burnt on it, the other a stolen motorbike. The second bonfire was built using dozens of tyres a 'white van man' dumped in the estate. The bonfires also saw a considerable rise in anti-social behaviour in the area, including attacks on the PSNI.

SDLP Cllr Brian Tierney, Independent Cllr Warren Robinson and Sinn Fein Cllr Caoimhe Mc Knight for Ballyarnett DEA met with residents in Galliagh today to discuss the ongoing anti-community activity in the area.

The three councillors now say they are working together with a range of local community and voluntary groups, local schools and statutory agencies to address the ongoing concerns and fear expressed by residents because of the issues at Linear Park.

A household survey undertaken last year by GSAP and the local Community Safety Team found that the overwhelming majority of residents do not want bonfires.

In a statement released today, the three councillors said: "We have met together with a range of local community sector partners to formulate a plan to address the genuine concerns from residents.

"We would appeal to those children and young people who are involved in this anti community behaviour to stop. Please understand that this behaviour is resulting in stress and fear amongst our local residents.

"We would appeal to all parents to make sure you are aware of where your child is and what they are doing in the evenings. We would also appeal to local businesses to be responsible in relation to the safe storage and disposal of your materials.

"We welcome the removal this morning of material and debris from the site and we will continue to work together with our statutory agencies to ensure this continues until the issue is resolved.

"We will be monitoring the situation closely and we will continue to take on board all the concerns of residents. Please feel free to contact us at any time and/or contact your local community/voluntary group."

The Neighbourhood Police Team accompanied the contractors to clear the site this morning and there will be additional police provision over this weekend.

The Council removed the burnt-out car. The Housing Executive agreed to try to get any bonfire materials removed while the Department  for Communities will try to secure contractors who will carry out this type of work as required.

The Police are trying to identify the people who dumped tyres at the site and will prosecute anyone who is caught doing so.
