A GROUP of Derry women are holding a day-long celebration of their fabulous neighbour, who despite fighting terminal cancer always puts others before herself.
Marie Mooney was first diagnosed with the disease in her brain and lungs around seven years ago and since then she has undergone operations, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.
But despite this gruelling battle she still finds time for her five children, her grandchildren and her neighbours.
Now the self-proclaimed ‘Real Housewives of Sheriff’s Glen’ in Springtown want to show Marie, who is a day patient at the Foyle Hospice, how much they appreciate everything she has done for them.
“It’s a wee small area of 19 houses and the people up our end have been living there since it was built here nine years ago,” explained chief organiser Rosemary Harkin.
“I’m just mad about her. She has a heart of gold. Marie is such a good neighbour to everybody but I want to make sure this day is all about her and she can see how much we all appreciate her."
Rosemary has planned a full day of treats for her friend which will start with a celebration in Sheriff’s Glen before the 30 strong group do the Foyle Hospice Female Walk/Run together.
After this they will be heading to Quay West for a meal with prosecco on arrival, balloons, a cake and an official photographer.
As well as fighting cancer Marie sadly lost her husband Frankie three years ago and had to leave hospital for his wake.
“She’s just such an inspiration,” said Rosemary.
“I don’t think she realises how many people she has inspired.
“Anyone who has the pleasure of being in her company can’t help but be inspired by her.
“She’s so involved in helping everyone else she forgets about herself.
“And she has a great sense of humour. We always have a great laugh.”
Surprises
The day will be packed with little surprises to make it extra special.
“This is a celebration of her and will give us great memories to look back on,” said Rosemary.
“For the last ten years I have done the walk in memory of my father Harry Lynn and last year I did it memory of my uncle Eamon Lynn too, but I’m sure they wouldn’t mind.
“My father will be proud looking down on us.”
The Foyle Hospice Walk takes place on June 10 and you can register though their website www.foylehospice.com.
