The PSNI in Derry has warned that begging is a criminal offence after concerns were raised over recent activity in the city centre.
Neighbourhood Policing Team Sergeant, Dermot Butler, said: "Foyleside Neighbourhood Policing Team have two officers specifically dedicated to the city centre.
"They are very well known to the traders, transport operators and all who use or travel throughout the city.
"Specific issues such as public alcohol consumption and begging are dealt with on a daily basis in co-operation with our partners.
"Where those people we find on the street are vulnerable and in need of help we will work with our partner agencies to keep them safe.
"Where there is evidence of exploitation or of other offences, police will take the necessary appropriate action.
He added: "Begging is a criminal offence.
"Depending on the type of incident, begging offences are mainly dealt with under the Vagrancy Act, Public Order Legislation or the Children and Young Persons Act (where a child may be exposed to risk to gain sympathy)."
