People from Derry who are travelling to Buncrana’s beaches this weekend have been warned to be vigilant after a broken bottle was found upright on Lady's Bay beach.
An Inishowen councillor said she was “absolutely horrified” at the possibility of broken glass bottles being placed on the peninsula’s beaches to deliberately injure visitors.
Buncrana Councillor Rena Donaghey said she could not imagine anyone wanting to intentionally harm beach-users.
Cllr Donaghey said: “I find it incomprehensible that anyone would deliberately break a glass bottle and set it into the sand in order to deliberately injure a child or an adult enjoying a day out at the beach.
“I hope this is not true. The first thing anyone does when they get to the beach is to take off their shoes and walk in the sand or go for a paddle. It would be awful to think that a wee child, or anyone for that matter, might get their feet cut.
"I would appeal to anyone using the beach to be mindful and take their rubbish, including glass bottles, home with them or place it in a rubbish bin. There are plenty of bins around Buncrana. There is really no excuse for leaving broken glass on the beach. It is very dangerous.
“We are blessed in Inishowen with our golden sandy beaches and we welcome visitors to use them and enjoy them. But please don’t destroy them with rubbish or cause an accident by carelessly leaving sharp glass buried in the sane, where it could harm a child, adult or an animal,” appealed Cllr Donaghey.
