The latest report by the Chief Medical Officer for Northern Ireland highlights the need for “urgent intervention,” DUP Foyle MLA Gary Middleton has said.
Mr Middleton described the news that more than 6,000 people attended emergency departments across Northern Ireland last year as “deeply concerning.”
Stating Derry has one of the highest rates of self-harming in Britain and Ireland, he revealed he would be seeking a meeting with the incoming Health Minister to “once again” highlight the need for a crisis intervention centre in the city.
He added: “The sad reality is that many of those who have self-harmed have done so before and are at much higher risk of taking their own lives by suicide.”
Mr Middleton concluded: “We need to have effective intervention to ensure that the necessary help is available immediately.”
