A wreath-laying ceremony will be held in Buncrana tonight to mark the 25th anniversary of the murder of Eddie Fullerton.

The 56-year-old (pictured), a Sinn Fein councillor on Donegal County Council – who was well known throughout Donegal and Derry – was shot dead by loyalist gunmen in his Cockhill home at 2.00am on 25 May, 1991.

A month later, a documentary on British television revealed a police file from Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) intelligence containing Fullerton's photograph and details was found in the possession of the UDA in Derry.

The weapon used to kill him was recovered two years later.

No one has ever been charged with the killing.

His family has long campaigned for an independent public inquiry into the events surrounding his murder

Donegal County Council last year passed a motion calling for the Irish Government to instigate a “full inquiry” into the killing.

Tonight’s ceremony will take place at 7.00pm at the Eddie Fullerton memorial at the “Stone Jug” close to Crana Bridge in Buncrana.
