A heritage plaque marking the family home of a Derry woman who was honoured for her role in the wake of the 1916 Easter Rising is to be unveiled in the city tomorrow night..

Elizabeth (Lizzie) Doherty joined Cumann Na mBan just after the 1916 Easter Rising and her contribution was recognised during the 50th anniversary in 1966 when she received medals of honour for her part in the struggle.

The plaque will be unveiled at 6.30pm at her family home in Waterloo Street, now the location of the Checkpoint Charlie shop.

It is the latest in a number of events being held in Derry to commemorate the centenary of the Rising.

Sinn Fein have issued an “open invitation” to anyone who would like to go along and “show their support for the family on this proud occasion.”
