Two quick-thinking road workers helped prevent a tragedy on the shores of Lough Foyle this afternoon when a man’s car began slipping on algae at a slipway at Culmore Point on the outskirts.
An eyewitness told how the man’s car was slipping towards the water when two Transport NI employees, working nearby, placed bricks under the wheels of the car to stop in slipping any further, allowing the man to get out of his vehicle.
The incident occurred shortly before 1.00pm
The man, who was in his 60, was not injured and no damage was caused to the car.
A spokesperson for the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS) said firefighters, assisted by Road Service personnel and a rope attached to the towbar of their lorry, pulled the car off the slipway (pictured).
The incident comes a month after the tragedy in Buncrana when a family of five from Derry drowned when their car slipped into Lough Swilly from the slipway on the town’s pier.
