There was no third time lucky for Derry owner Paul Ellis when his dog Hiya Butt was pipped in the final of the William Hill Greyhound Derby run at Wimbledon tonight..

Hiya Butt, who went off at 7/1, powered out of trap five to open up a two length lead at the first bend.

The advantage was extended to three lengths down the back straight.

However, the pack began to close in at the start of the straight and the Derry-owned dog was caught feet from the line finishing third.

Winner Jaytee Jet, the 15/8 favourite, took the top prize of £150,000.

Droopy’s Roddick (7/2) took the runner-up prize of £20,000 while Hiya Butt’s third place earned Ellis £15,000.

In is the third defeat in the past 12 months for the Ellis, having lost out in the finals of the English and Irish Derbies with Farloe Blitz.

Speaking afterwards, Ellis said Hiya Butt had exceded all expectations.

He said: "We didn't expect this from this dog. He has run his heart out. We cannot complain."
