Unconscious man rescued from River Foyle mudflats in multi-services operation

A man is being treated in Altnagelvin Hospital after being rescued from River Foyle mudflats this afternoon.

The incident occurred shortly before 2.30pm.

Police, firefighters, ambulance crews and volunteers from Foyle Search and Rescue were involved in the recovery of the man.

A statement from Foyle Search and Rescue said: “At 14:22hrs on Monday 6th June, the PSNI activated FSRs Emergency Response Team to reports of a person having entered the water.
“Pager co-ordinator dispatched two boats and a land crew.

“On arrival at the reported location an unconscious male was observed on mudflats on the riverbank.

“NIFRS appliances and NIAS arrived on scene and a joint rescue operation was put in place.

“Mud mats were deployed to safely access the male and FSR personnel, along with Ambulance and Fire Service administered first aid and carried out spinal precautions, stabilising the male prior to transfer by boat to Prehen.

“On arrival NIFRS and FSR volunteers transferred him to an ambulance.

“At this point the male was unresponsive but it is understood he regained consciousness en route to hospital where he is currently being treated.”
