Ireland’s biggest open golf tournament is to return to Co Derry next year, it has been confirmed..
The renowned touring Golf Digest Volvo Open, one of the biggest and best amateur golf tournaments on the island of Ireland will back at the Roe Park Resort in Limavady in 2017.
The announcement comes after over 100 amateur golfers gathered in the sunshine to compete in tournament held at the Co Derry venue on Friday last.
Next year’s competition will take place at the luxury four star resort on Sunday, 28 May 2017.
Friday’s event was the first leg of the Open to be held in Northern Ireland this year, and the first time Roe Park Resort hosted the tournament.
Winners on the men’s category were Alan Rankin and Derek Powell, while Mary O’Kane finished top of the pack in the ladies competition.
Over £5,000 worth of prizes, such as golf equipment and holidays, were handed out to the winners of each of the playing categories, the ‘nearest the pin’ and ‘longest drive’ contests, and the evening raffle.
Winners from the competition progress to the 2016 Golf Digest Volvo Grand Final in order to compete for the Champions Cup later in the year.
Terry Kelly, Golf & Spa manager for Roe Park Resort, commented said they were delighted t the amateur Open had proven to be a “resounding success|||” and would be returning next year.
He added: “Not only has there been a fantastic atmosphere along the course and in the clubhouse, but the standard of the golf has been exceptional.”
