The Derry News has been shortlisted for six awards at the ‘Oscars’ of the media world in Northern Ireland.

The Northern Ireland Media Awards annually recognise the best of local journalism.

And, this year, the Derry News is in the running for six of the awards.

The paper has been shortlisted for the prestigious Local Newspaper of the Year Award.

It has also been nominated for Front Page of the Year for its coverage of the Buncrana Pier tragedy earlier this year.

The Derry News has also been shortlisted for the Supplement of the Year award for a special 32-page supplement produced to celebrate the hugely-popular Foyle Cup football tournament.

The news this week of the final shortlist for the awards was a double success for Derry News sports reporter Steven Doherty, who has been nominated for Newcomer of the Year and Columnist of the Year for his ‘The Warrior’s Code’ column.

The paper’s editor, Ciaran O’Neill, has been shortlisted for Local Newspaper Journalist of the Year, an accolade he previously won in 2014.

The winners of this year’s Northern Ireland Media Awards will be announced at a special ceremony at the Mac Theatre in Belfast on June 24.
