Sinn Féin MEP Martina Anderson has paid tribute to the contribution carers make to our society.
Ms Anderson was speaking after attending a coffee morning in Derry to mark Carers’ Week.
"Carers make an immense contribution to society but at times their hard work and dedication can go unrecognised.
"As a carer myself who looks after my mother, I know how challenging it can be but I also know how much of a rewarding experience it is.
"As our population gets older, more and more of us will become carers in the time ahead so it is important we understand and value the key role they play.”
Ms Anderson concluded: "While the vast majority carers do not do what they do for recognition or reward, we also need to care for the carers and thank them for their hard work.”
