Derry City and Strabane District Council has renewed its warning to those who illegally dump rubbish on the city’s streets.

It follows a clean-up of a street plagued by fly-tippers amidst warnings that those behind the dumping will face prosecution.

The laneways between Tyrconnell Street and Limewood Street in the Bogside area recently witnessed an upsurge in illegal dumping, with bags of household refuse being indiscriminately deposited close to people’s homes.

Similar problems have plagued the Rosemount area for a number of years, which has resulted in the local council successfully prosecuting those behind the dumping.

Following the concerns, the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team, assisted by Derry City and Strabane District Council, carried out a clean-up of the area.

Colm Barton of the Triax Neighbourhood Management Team said they had received assurances from council that it would be seeking prosecutions against those responsible for the fly-tipping.

“This is a very settled area, and people were understandably angry at the amount of rubbish being dumped outside their homes,” he said.

“There is also a serious health and safety concern here, so the Neighbourhood Management Team, assisted by council, conducted a clean-up of the area.”

He added: “We’ve also been very strong assurances by the council that they will now look at who was behind this dumping, and seek prosecutions against them.”

Meanwhile, a spokesperson for Derry City and Strabane District Council said all refuse dumped in lanes woulf be checked for identification so fixed penalty notices could be issued.
