Council to look at cash injection for Sports Complex after concerns raised about ‘the state’ of the facility

Derry City and Strabane District Council is to look urgently at allocating funds to upgrade Templemore Sports Complex ahead of a planned multi-pound re-development of the facility.

It comes after the local authority approved ane allocation of £500,000 for the completion of a business case for the complete rebuild of the Sports Complex.

The funding will also include the appointment of a consultancy team who will look at the design and cost of the planned new facility.

However, in the meantime, council has pledged to look at allocating funding in the short-term to improve the Complex prior to the re-build after concerns were raised about the ‘state’ of the building.

Former Mayor Sinn Fein councillor Elisha McCallion todld a meeting of the Council’s Health and Community that it Complex had suffered as a result of ‘years of neglect’.

Cllr McCallion added while major re-development was planned to take place in the next five years, ‘some sort of injection of capital money’ was needed in the short-term.

She continued as someone who used the facility almost on a daily basis, it was clear that the Sports Complex was in a ‘bad state and in need of a bit of a facelift’.

The matter will now be brought before the council’s Capital Projects team.
